Olive grove in the scorching afternoon sun, Kaş, Turkey

Our backpacker travel guide described Kas as a quaint little fishing village on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, halfway between Mugla and Antalya. Well, this must have been long before this guide was printed. When we arrived late in the afternoon we found probably the last room available in a hostel on the outskirts of town. Hungry, we ventured into Kas where we found the daytime fish market transformed into a huge outdoor dining area. Tourists sat shoulder to shoulder in front of the numerous restaurants and bars, trying to get the attention of one of the few waiters and waitresses. Beer, wine and especially raki (the 50% alc. Aniseed spirit, similar to the French pastis) were flowing fast, but the food took a while. I'm sure the term "Happy Hour" was invented here ...
